After playing guitar for some weeks, I'm starting to feel what I need to be comfortable and get the sound I want.
First, let me tell you something about alternate picking: You can only go fast with a precise pick. Having said that, the best ones are those that are pointy. I like Dunlop picks a lot. They are great! I have tried the Jazz 3, but I feel that it is a little small for my fingers. I admit that it might be my general lack of experience in playing guitar that gives me this feeling, but I have some thick fingers and I really believe that I would benefit from a bigger pick. I have other bigger picks and in terms of size, I feel better with them. I'm currently waiting on some Dunlop Ultex Sharp picks. The tip is like the Jazz 3 but the overall feel and size is like the Dunlop Tortex, which I like.
In terms of strings, As you might have read, I like a fuller sound. I tried first some Ernie Ball Regular Slinky and I have to say I love them. They stay in tune very well and the sound is very consistent. I use some amplification and effects software and it has some very decent tuners. When I'm tuning my strings I can see what kind of oscillation I get from the string note, and these are considerably more stable than the original strings. But I confess that I like to play some music that requires a lot of detuning. For theses, thicker strings are required, not only to get a fuller/heavier sound but also to avoid some oscillation that you might get from detuning regular strings. So to the music store I went. I bought some DR strings. I got a 7 string pack and, of course, I will only use the top 6 strings. As a result, I will end up with a 52-42-32-24-16-11 (I got the LT7-9 pack). I think this will give me the heavier sound that I'm looking for in the rhythm parts and still allow a nice sound in the solos, retaining the ability to do some fast shredding. Not that I can do any fast shredding, lol, but the sound will have kind of a higher pitch. You get the point, right?
My next objective is to buy some EMG pickups. I will go for the 81 and 85. I'm thinking the X version, because the sound overall is more balanced and less colored by the pre-amps of the pickups. I'm not choosing these because they are active. I'm choosing them because, after listening other pickups from other brands, active and passive, I believe they provide the sound that I'm looking for.
