I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has noticed subtle differences in the originally released 'Cruelty' album, and the 2 disc special edition/marbled cross version. I feel the originally released version is slightly weaker. On the 2-disc version, I have noticed slight differences in songs like 'Cruelty Bought Thee Orchids', 'Desire In Violent Overture" and 'Bathory Aria'. These differences actually add more to the songs.

If you have also noticed these changes, then which do you prefer?

Also, I can't help but prefer some of their demo's/re-mixes to the finished version, such as the demo's for 'Born In a Burial Gown', 'The Death Of Love', 'Lustmord And Wargasm (The Re-licking....)', Amor E Morte'.

Anyone else?

Im exactly the opposite, I've never heard the normal edition. I bought the 2-disc edition first then bought the 4-CD boxset which contains the original (but i'm keeping the box set sealed). I also like the original songs better than the remixes/demos usually

Remember that most of us have never heard the 2-disc edition! Me being one of those people, I wasn't aware that there was any difference between the two versions, so thanks for letting me know --

As for the demos/remixes, I've never wholly liked one better than the original, although often some parts of the demos/remixes have pros over the original, and vice versa (notably "Thirteen Autumns (Red October mix)" and the "Honey and Sulphur" demo).
are you implying that you could make 'Funeral In Carpathia' better than it already is?

haha

If I get ever get some decent equipment, one day I'll engineer the "perfect" versions of certain songs (combining the best aspects of the originals and re-recordings/remixes/demos to create the musical equivalent of the bee's knees!)

"Funeral In Carpathia", "Thirteen Autumns" and "Honey And Sulphur" will be especially epic!

The only thing about the 'Be Quick Or Be Dead' version that I like is at the end when the music stops and Dani speaks the words 'candelabra snuffed, prey - silhouette wedded.....' in his deep voice.

Well, basically Raped[of]Faith ...... yes. Yes, I am :)

By superimposing just a few bits from the "Be Quick Or Be Dead" version into it, I could form the perfect "Funeral In Carpathia"!

I'd never noticed that Portrait Of The Dead Countess was missing from the 'cross' version! I wonder why, because it's on their other 2-disc version (which has the album cover that I also prefer).

I only own the 2 disc special edition, sans the fancy Celtic cross packaging- I think the track listing is almost the same save for the fact that the Celtic cross version is missing Portrait of the Dead Countess.
Anyway, now I want to hear the original release to see exactly what the subtle differences are! I daresay the special edition will remain my preferred version.
I have the 2 disc version and I had no idea the certain songs sounded different on the original release. I can never find the original in stores though, which is weird. I would like to get it though, especially since my 2disc version seems to be glitched O.o
I very rarely get my cross out of it's packaging because it's so hard to get it back in. It's such a tight fit.
I, like Sean's Inferno, have the 'simple' edition, yet I do know the special edition's songs. I have never ever heard a difference between the mentioned songs on the original and the extended version of the album. The special edition lacks the first Lustmord and Wargasm and Portrait of the dead Countess, whilst the normal one lacks all the latter songs (Black Metal, Hallowed by thy Name, Sodomy & Lust and Twisting Further Nails) and the second Lustmord and Wargasm. This is, as said, the first time that I have heard of a difference in the songs that are on both versions, and I have always found them to sound exactly the same. Could you point out what kind of differences these are?
I'm with Final, what exactly are the differences? And for those who say "where are you getting the 2 disc version?" well it seems that is the only version available now, at least in America sans internet ordering or ebay that is.

From memory, on the 2-disc version the beginning of 'Benighted Like Usher' has choirboy-like vocals, 'Eyes That Witnessed Madness' has slightly different sound effects and samples ( harpsicord style keyboards and females screaming when he speaks the part: "So ends this twisted fables worth, and though spared the pyres bite....". Later in the same song there are slight differences (louder death knell drumming as she speaks: "The spirits have all but flown judgment...." All these things are lacking in the original version.

'Desire In Violent Overture' has clearer, coarser and sharper vocals at various times, 'Cruelty Bought Thee Orchids' has a slight difference in keyboards just before Dani sings: "Exacting obeisance, her gaze held a seance...."

Again, these are the ones I can think of right now, I haven't listened to either version in a while.

Also, on the 2-disc version, the individual portrait of Dani is different (possibly reversed, too) , the cover is slightly different (Elizabeth is laying at a different angle in the bath), and also the centerfold photo is different.

I cant believe some are having difficulty finding the original. I see it all the time. A shop in my area is selling several copies for $10 brand new. I'm tempted to buy them as back-up copies!

Which special edition are you talking about? Both those songs appear on the 2-disc album (along with 'Black Metal', 'Sodomy And Lust', 'The Re-Licking Of Cadaverous Wounds' and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'), but not on the cross version.
Also, on the 2-disc version, in 'Benighted Like Usher', when he speaks: "Benighted like ill-fated Usher", his voices echoes a bit, which it doesn't on the original. And when he sings: "Of raucous life hushed unto whispers" it is immediately followed by loud thunder.

That is exactly what I am talking about; they do not appear on the Special Cross version, but are present on the 'regular' two-disc edition. However, I wonder... all these changes, these differences, are between the normal, single-disc edition and the two-disc/cross version, meaning that the latter share the exact same songs (excluding the lack of the two songs), right?
