Ground rules:

1. I'm not asking for your favourite Cradle of Filth song.
2. I don't want anything like, "Anything from their Cruelty and the Beast era".
3. I'm not asking for your favourite era of the band.
4. Have fun!
5. Refer to 4

I'm expecting lots of different answers, and it'll be interesting to see what we get. I would say that "Cruelty Brought thee Orchids" represents the band. What about you guys and gals?

Ah, fair enough, man. Yeah, it's a very specific song, that one. He's almost singing on it *shivers*.

Well I have to say fetus of a new day kicking because its what theyre like these days. Not my favorite song but when I think of COF right now its the 1st song that sums them up going over toward mainstream and all that shit.
I agree with you, FTCTE came out in 99, thats like the middle point for CoF history.
Your so smart sean (which is my name as well) i wish i was like you.

It's fairly hard to say since the band has changed so much (several times over), but I guess the song which represents all the best aspects of Cradle (in my opinion) would be "The Rape And Ruin Of Angels" (which just so happens to be amongst my favourites too). It's very underrated, extremely rarely played live, but it covers pretty much every element that we love the band for.

It has the heavy-as-fuck thrashy parts, accompanied by creepy and ominous passages and eventually seguing into sublime, almost melancholic, orchestral verses. I'd say the only other Cradle song with an equally broad range would be "Queen of Winter, Throned", but it gets a tad repetitive at some points - despite being an awesome song, I rarely listen to the entire thing anymore, whereas "Rape and Ruin" is far more diverse in my opinion.

However, I also think "From The Cradle To Enslave" may actually represent all of the band's eras the best, because it has the modern twinge to it which was eventually adopted for albums like Midian, Nymphetamine and Thornography in their later days, as well as maintaining their trademark sound to an extent. So I'd have to say that one, actually.
I'd probably have to say "Tortured Soul Asylum". It's got the chilling, talkative, low vocals at the beginning before going into the heavy, 'trademark' sound. It has the great keyboards, amazing drumming and killer guitar that we've come to expect, and the last 3 minutes of the song are orgasmic. It showcases Dani's vocals and lyrical abilities very well. It's also the last song on the last 'old' cradle album, sort of a send-off to that era.
1.From The Cradle To Enslave
2.Queen Of Winter, Throned
3.Under Huntress Moon
4.Tragic Kingdom
hmmm...I have four, of course only in my opinion

1) From the Cradle to Enslave
2) Nymphetamine
3) Cthulu Dawn
4) Queen of Winter Throned

it's just something about how the songs go that gives me the thought
You say not to comment your favorite era of the band but mine's definately Cruelty and the Beast. As for the song you want i gotta say I Am the Thorn or The Twisted Nails of Faith.
Ah, another Thornography song, I see. This is interesting. Why "The Twisted Nails of Faith," also? I think it represents Elizabeth Bathory in a full light more than anything.

Nymphetamine, yet is not my favorite song but is one of the most famous songs of the band.
Mmmmm, I think is the most famous because everybody likes it and it represents the band, meanwhile you can say that is famous because that represents the band. But yea, it can be other way.

But it's not really a song which encompasses all of their styles; in fact it's one of the least Cradle-like songs I can think of as a whole - just because it's their most famous doesn't mean it represents them best as such.

I stick by my claim that From The Cradle To Enslave does sum them up the best - recorded bang in the middle of their career, it encompasses everything from the past, and hints towards what would come in the future.

I always felt Dusk and Her Embrace was THE perfect Cradle song. It has all the elements that make a brilliant Cradle song- Dani is at his best, the guitars sound evil yet still manage to be... upbeat, for lack of a better term; the bass rhythm feels perfect (when you can hear it, though- the bass always felt a bit quiet to me until Midian), and the drums are fantastic. The solo-ish bit in the beginning also sounds great, and on the CoF members' official profiles, the song tends to show up often on the 'Fave song to perform live' category.

Lord Abortion would also be a good choice. You can hear both low-pitched growls from Dani in the beginning and high-pitched screams, often within seconds of each other. The only bit which I felt wasn't quite right was the first time the operatic vocals kick in (that HAH-hah-ah-ah thingy :P). Otherwise it pretty much sums up Cradle well- you gotta love that intro riff :D
