In my opinion, production is an important part to the overall effect of a piece music. But what do you prefer production to be like when listening to music? Do you like raw, lo-fi recordings, or clean-cut, smoothly produced recordings, or somewhere in between?

Generally it'll depend what I'm listening to. I find more raw production creates a higher sense of atmosphere in some music, and I like this especially when listening to black metal artists like Burzum, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth etc. With CoF, I find their earlier albums, like Dusk and Principle, to be more atmospheric due to the rawer production. However, I like clean, well-produced music as well, especially in death metal (I never liked lo-fi death metal as much) and I find a lot of bands benefit from higher production as well. Overall, it depends what I'm listening to as to what I prefer.

i agree that it all deprends on what what you're listening to. a raw kind of sound does in a way add a bit of atmosphere, but what gets on my nerves are these people that just have to have music sounding like they were recorded in a closet. i'm personally one that prefers to hear all the instruments that are present on an album so i'm not paticularly fond of crappy low-fi sounding albums. very few bands are able to get away woth this in my opinion.
As for me, anything depends on my mood.
Well as for cradle i do prefer The "raw" production sound..
I do also enjoy the more cleaner cuts too
I like cleaner production. I want to hear what the band is doing. Some of the older Cradle albums bother me because of this actually. I can tell what I'm hearing is awesome, but it sounds off.

That's actually something I like about the newer work, and have really disagreed with reviewers on. I've read a lot of reviews of Godspeed that said "This is too slickly produced, and it comes off sounding like a parody of itself because of it." And I'm going "This is *wonderful*! I can hear everything!"

Heh.
