Hi all new here. Slowly getting back into COF after many years. Was a big fan at one point but my intrest faded around 2001 and I got into Hardcore Punk. Havent heard any COF since the Bitter Suites album. Randomly found My Cradle of fear VHS at the bottom of a box last week and decided to see if They were still around. Not only are they still around but it would appear theyve been rather busy. Listened to a few tracks off Midian and Cruelty and to my suprise I found i still quite enjoy them.

All the later albums have a commercial sheen to them and are far far catchier and more melodic than the first few albums. Up to Midian you could say that they were a "sort of" Black Metal based band although they incorporated far more into it. After Bitter Suites the BM touches went bye bye in favour of a more polished and bombastic standard metal influenced sound. The albums that followed could be broken down as follows
Nymphetamine.... is by far their lightest album in terms of sound, no concepts as such and very varied in style with everything from a ballad "Title track" to very Maidenesque guitar parts throughout. It's probably the catchiest album they have done.
Thornography...Basically scrapped the entire atmosphere of the older sound and the orchestrations were gone for a much cleaner heavier metal sound on many tracks. It's the album than lost them a large amount of the older fans, and obtained them a new batch of fans that prefered this style over the early albums. "backing vocals by Ville Valo of HIM on one track" did raise eyebrows but then Cradle always did like to make a statement.
Godspeed On The Devils Thunder...Saw them bring back the concept and full keyboards but none of the atmosphere of the early work. It has some brilliant tracks but in general isn't a patch on either Dusk or Midian.
DDVA...the latest album I guess I'm probably the wrong person to ask as I basically would award it 4/10 at best. The talent is there, just in MY opinion the songs aren't, I find it totally faceless.
I'm sure many might disagree with my comments especially some younger members "I'm 37" who came to Cradle after Bitter Suites, but if Midian and the older albums are the ones you really enjoyed for the style and atmosphere you may find a lot of what came next too soft and lacking the atmosphere of the old material. There's probably less than 20 members on here that came from the original forums from back in the days of Midian that still post. Many lost interest in them after Thornography.
Quite a few current Newer Cradle fans wouldn't listen to bands like Immortal, Satyricon, Mayhem, Emperor etc and the bands that were Cradles peers throughout the 90's that might give you some idea to the changes in sound. There are younger members that are still full on BM fans like ADreamOfWolves, who even though they came to Cradle later on still prefer the older albums.
It's a debate that will never die just like Cradle V Dimmu, Old V New Cradle is still ongoing. Newer fans love the last few albums and many love the older stuff, older fans love the first batch upto Midian and in general tolerate or enjoy the later albums or at least find tracks they enjoy.

So im just over halfway through Damnation and so far im really 50/50. Not just the with what ive heard overall but even with individual songs. Some parts I love and other parts just seem awful. Theres no lovecraftian/shakesperian (whatever you want to call it) feel because its Religious in theme. The typical COF thrashy riffs are there but now theres also some very bouncey almost rockesqe riffs present aswell. Not complaining but not typically COF. The Orchestra have deffinately brought the entire sound to a new level. But to be honest im sick of it allready. It sounds way to epic and keeps reminding me of that sodding Dimmu borgir Track. Midians simple Synths and female vocals work far better than the balls out orchestra and full choir. Better to reign in hell opens with an amazing 25 seconds. But stalls immiditely after and eventually got so bad I had to skip to the next track. Serpent tounge I thought was an ok tune. But the pre chorus has a sleazy rock feel to it and it seems danni is singing through a traffic cone during the chourus (anyone whos been drunk and used a traffic cone as a megaphone will know what i mean). carrion I liked. Had a bit of an Megadeath feel and also some great 80s cheese with the synths. But the time changes along with the genesis scripture part just kill it for me. Will listen to the rest tommorow. Will need some sleep to soothe my ruffled feathers.

Yeah, I agree. The demo versions are almost always better than the final studio mix.
Permalink Reply by HELLHOUND on January 19, 2012 at 21:29 Yeah Temptation blows (they did a great job though, since the original track is fucking ridiculous)! Let's see: Devil Woman and Dirge Inferno.
Permalink Reply by HELLHOUND on January 21, 2012 at 22:46 Thornography does sound different! I really want to hear the new stuff.... this might be their last full-length album, perhaps?
Permalink Reply by HELLHOUND on January 23, 2012 at 16:55 Exactly! For some odd reason... it just feels that way!

I agree, I have a sinking feeling that this may be the last, but then I would be alright with that...I think.
Permalink Reply by Christine on January 23, 2012 at 18:13 @Ammity: Funny that you, just getting back in to them, already have a sinking feeling. But don't worry, that seems to happen prior to every new album. People will proclaim it will be their last...
Permalink Reply by HELLHOUND on January 25, 2012 at 23:03 I think Devil to the Metal and Stay (cover) are the best songs on the album, along with Cemetery and Sundown and TFoanDK.
