As a response to what was going on in one of the other threads about the joke on elitism. What do you guys have to say about metal elitism. Here's a few questions to get things started:

Are you an elitist?

Will it ever end?

Is it good for metal itself?

For me, I'll say sadly, yes I am somewhat an elitist at times. I want to strive not to be, but at times it's difficult. I don't think elitism will ever end as newer subgenres arrive like "metalcore" of course, and yeah at the moment I hate metalcore because it has nothing to prove to whatsoever. I like "nu metal" because that is what I started off with. I don't see the problem with it and alot of nu metal bands "know" how to make really catchy songs or choruses, which is a big bravo in my opinion. I mean when is catchy songs or amazing choruses not good? People attribute it to mainstream, but who cares? That's another thing many metal fans are elitist about is mainstream music. I don't think elitism is good for metal. I watched a guy on youtube, whom is a metal-fan himself, he brought up how elitism was bad for metal. Especially if it's within the genre itself. I would have to agree as well. He said he did not like "metalcore", but it's better than Justin Bieber, not detracting from Bieber fans. Also he brought up how fans judge fans just on the bands they listen to, style they wear and not their actual "person". I myself can self-accuse myself of doing that while going to concerts, "Look at that guy wearing so-and-so hahah!" I usually just do it jokingly though with my friend, not seriously. Elitism is almost like a cult though, sometimes I see it as bad as what you see with Islamic extremists or Christian fundamentalists. Except metal fans don't necessarily want to take over the world, nor do I think most have the mental capacity to do so. Metal isn't objective, it's subjective. That is why there are no boundaries to it. Yes, you have numerous sub-genres showing up and some of them are self-limiting. If you go outside the genre, an obvious one would be black metal, you are either an apostate or worthless human being who listens to shit music.

I will stop here to see what you all think.

I still proudly love Hair Metal as that's what I grew up with in the mid 80's, guess that rules me out of being an Elitist! lol

No it will never end, with each new genre a new Elitist is born from the genre before it!

Simply glad I've seen from the Beatles, The Who, Stones, Donovan, Small Faces, that was the first breakaway if you like with the British Invasion, then Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Yes, Uriah Heap, May Blitz, King Crimson, ELP, Santana, John McLaughlin, Rory Gallagher, Slade's and Deep Purple's first tour world tours through t of course Led Zeppelin Feb '72 booyeah! Then the Alice Cooper, Kiss, Muddy Waters, various through to the end of the seventies then a bit of a fizzle until the Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy, Priest and Maiden, Ministry, Kreator, MDB, Motorhead/ Metalica/ Megadeth bit. Impossible to be an elitist ... there are so many I can't even think of in the Heavy, Death, Doom, BM bit to list I've seen. Can't stand Pop and modern Rap at all if that makes me elitist ... no, just means I have a semblance of taste :P.

I'm not a metal elitist, I'm just an elitist of my own tastes.  Like anyone who really cares about what they like should be.

lol they should be?

Elitism particularly happens among Cradle of Filth alot as well. There is a huge hate-fetish with Dani Filth amongst the metal community with many people. Attacking him with all sorts of crap. Also saying the band just sounds like absolute shit and what not. Has anyone particular actually listened to the band? Like more than once before throwing them in the can? I understand the vocals are hard to get into, but it takes a while to realize how they fit into the music itself. I think they fit very well.

#yeah.

Okay nobody has really said anything except for that they are or are not elitists....this discussion can go into whatever elitism you want to rant about in metal.

I guess we all fall into that category

Yes, but you all think it is constructive to go and flame people for liking so-and-so?

Oh I don't think it's constructive, just amusing to annoy younger music listeners lol

I am kind of guilty of being an elitist, at least when it comes to lyrics. But I guess I also kind of look down on people who listen to really simple music. I think the reason for that is, if you have simple tastes, it makes you look like a simpleton, whether or not that's actually the case--and it may not be. Often isn't.

I mean I don't just listen to metal, in fact I like many different genres, as long as the music suits my tastes and ears...but that's another story.

Yeah true, but then I am pretty sure younger listeners do it as well just to act like they fit in to "something" cough* cough* ADreamofWolves lol

I'll admit though, I used to act like him with his black metal fanaticism for a while when I was in high school.
