It's a sub-genre. You can tell because it has two words.

Metal music is a genre. Black metal, death metal, doom metal, Viking metal, etc. are all sub-genres.

Being a sub-genre isn't a value judgement; it's not a "lesser" type of music than metal. It's just more specific. A lot of metal isn't black metal. That doesn't make it better or worse - just different.

Also a sub-genre. America is a genre of country, and corporate America is a sub-genre...
It's technically a sub-genre, because it takes its roots in metal music and has taken it in a different direction ... but yeah, as someone said, for a lot of people it's a way of life - almost, funnily enough, like a religion, in that it teaches appreciation of nature and stuff, and often talks about things like "the north wind" as a deity. This kind of thing can't be said about many other sub-genres of metal ... so in a way it's more than that.
Indeed.

Ahhhh....How we all forget the time when "Black Metal" was more an ideaology, than just a sub-genre of music. I agree that it is a sub-genre, but it started as more of a way of thinking. Everyone always claims that all black metal is satanic & this and that, which is bullshit. There are lots of subjects covered in this sub-genre, everything from mysticism, war, darkness, anti-religion, folklore, misanthropy...etc. But overall the ideaology started as kind of "be the wolf, not the sheep", to sum it up. Those were the good ole days of Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Bathory, etc....These cats practiced what they preached, just look at their criminal histories.....
I guess today, as it has become more mainstream, some of the ideaology has been lost in corporate record company bullshit black metal. But those of us who remember the good ole days will always appreciate "True Kvlt Black Metal" & the ideaologies behind it. Black metal also does draw an influence from classical music, more so then death metal. Listen to a Gorgoroth song, and it sounds like a symphony being conducted,(mind you a symphony from hell) but it has a ver "classical" feel to it. Also, I think black metal is more atmospheric. Sorry, now Im rambling....stoned on Orange Kush....
