Whenever I hear newer CoF albums, it sounds like the same vocal-wise in every song, which is: A semi-long opening scream, regular ultra heavily layered verse vocals, less layered interlude vocals. Would it be too much if Dani really just put some emotion in it, like a heavy growl, or maybe some shouted cleans like in The Rape and Ruin of Angels, or at least put some more effort into his screams like before the 3rd verse of The Persecution Song. Awhile back I thought Dani was a fantastic vocalist, and he's still very uniqe, but now I think he just sounds like he doesn't care about the vocals these days. I'm just voicing my oppinion, wondering if anyone else thinks the same.
Even if you don't think so, go ahead and post your thoughts. The forums have been pretty stale lately, so it would be nice to see some discussion.

Remember at the end of "Summer Dying Fast" on the Heavy, Left-Handed and Candid DVD when Dani gets his throat slit by the circus folk? That wasn't staged - that was real. The old Dani died that day, at the command of none other than Paul Allender.
Then they bring out their opus magnus: a new Dani, which they created from human body parts, cheese and old bin-bags. He looks pretty similar, but there are a few problems: even when making his first public debut, he was wearing a ridiculous mesh shirt with little horns on the shoulders, with the word "Devil" across the middle. Everyone thought this was just "Dani being kooky", but I take it as a sign of what's to come.
To be fairness, it took time for the fact that there had been a switch to become apparent. Evidently when Dani II came about, the original Dani still had a lot of lyrics and ideas for albums knocking about, which accounts for the quality of DaaD and parts of Nymphetamine and Thornography, but there are already problems brewing due to the fact that despite this new Dani doing a fantastic impression of the original, something's not quite right and it's getting worse ...

Permalink Reply by Raped[of]Faith on August 19, 2011 at 1:11 There are parts on DDVA where he still sounds absolutely wicked (Persecution Song, Beyond Eleventh Hour, Spawn of Love and War), but I think a lot of it has to do with the albums being 'concept' albums. Godspeed was just boring IMO, the songs were simply telling the story, whereas with Cruelty for example, Dani was able to expand because it was a relatively loose concept, thus I think it was more personal.
But, what do I know? I could be entirely wrong about that. However, I wish he'd do an entire song in his 'new' shrieky voice (example: 4:57 in Beyond Eleventh Hour, or 4:44-4:55 in Persecution Song), just for something different.

However, from listening it seems it's just his voice fucking up on him and we just have to deal with it. I mean you can tell how much his voice has matured as well by the way he does the semi-growl vocals. I am actually glad he moved on from the high shrieking-silly vocals from Vempire and Dusk. I think he is doing fine honestly.
I thought his vocals on Godspeed were emotional RapedofFaith, they seemed really brutal and sinister. I surely felt he was more into Godspeed. His signature shriek was pretty top-notch as well. DDVA it drooped alittle bit backwards. He seemed less motivated for DDVA than he was for Godspeed.
Who cares anyways...Cradle of Filth isn't really a band about emotion, but moreso story-telling and so on.

Permalink Reply by Nutsack of Filth on August 19, 2011 at 4:59 I'm sorry, as much as I love a lot of Cradle's work and the vocals, you're kidding yourself if you can't see the comedy in some of the vocals. Like the beginning verses of Haunted Shores for instance.
It's not just Cradle of Filth, I find a lot of Dir en grey's vocals funny at times too.

High shrieking-silly vocals? Oh man..
Permalink Reply by Raped[of]Faith on August 19, 2011 at 5:00 Epic as the song is, the first verse of The Rape And Ruin of Angels is almost laughable... never really liked that part of the song...
(For the record, I love his 90s vocals, but verses like that, and Haunted Shores, etc., are a bit funny)

Permalink Reply by Nutsack of Filth on August 19, 2011 at 5:09 Very few people could pull off accommodating ten dildos in one orifice, it's amazing. Still funny, though.
(by the way, once you've got the technique down, it's really not that difficult to do - most good metal vocalists probably could do it if they wanted to)

How is that funny? That's called talent. Very few metal vocalists can pull of what Dani did in Haunted Shores. The ability to scream that high, for that long, and for that speed, is amazing. There's nothing funny in that.
Permalink Reply by Lifestalker on August 19, 2011 at 5:13 I don't think he has gotten past his stage of "Black metal and screaming vocals requires extaordinary talent"...Doing a bunch of squawking does sound funny in a way, I am glad his vocals shaped more into character on Cruelty and The Beast.
Hopefully he will expand his horizons and see why it's laughable one day, rather than serious.
