i hope that answers your question.
im a goth
I like to see people being different and showing the world that they have more about them than just a 9-5 job. Self expression is the way forward, whatever form it takes. Human beings love to be labelled; Gangs, groups, whatever age whatever they are into - it makes little difference.

I am a "Phil"

Speaking purely as an old git I can say that there is little difference between Goths, Punks skinheads... Teddy Boys - whatevers. Its a name; a label for those who need to be called something. The common denominator is rebellion! To feel like one is different or that one belongs to a group of people that others may find distateful. I was there in '77 when the punks began, I saw the different factions fight with each other, for what I have never quite understood. Was it the music ... if so I can think of better things to fight for - How about Freedom of speech and Self Expression; the end to wars and child abuse, and violence to women, and for that matter, men. No more Rascism, Sexism, Sizeism or Ageism - or any other injustice that we force upon fellow human beigs becaus they are different from us!
I have always been me, I listen to what I want to like and, and within reason, I do as I want to do. Life has, and will, throw all types of shit at us all, if a label can help us to get thru those bad times then I really dont have a problem.
The biggest problem I face reguklarly is that people view me as old, or past it. ok my body is fucked but my mind is far more aware than it has ever been. I have a far younger outlook than my daughter (shes 22 and you would think she were 60). I love all the same music as most of you, Horror and Sci Fi, Self expression, Outsider and Deviant Art - difference is I was born in 1963...

If you wanna be a Goth - go for it and enjoy your youth - youll soon be as old as I am and your body may have left you in the crapper as mine has!
So basically... do what you do and try not to hurt too many people as you do it. Dont try to change the world - it will not happen! But you can change your corner of it.... no matter what your label may be...
Ahm..I think goth's are nice..but in my place I even coulndn't find goth's who understand what's it really meens))and maybe I'm wrong but black metal and goth's have no invariable communications...I think)
no hate those stupid fucking twats with the fucking black make up you just want to throw stones at them. only kidding i was a chav for a second there.I love a goth does that count goth girls are sexy and personally im not but i have dabbled homestly im a lazy bastard if i could be arsed i probably would take time do put on a bit of make u and my clothes are mostly black i used to wear a collar i definately love the look but the collar made me sweaty and itchy awell i dont particularly beleiv in any sort of god or gods so that dont come in to it i belive in people and albert einsteins theory of relativity .
goth isn't metal, nor does it have anything to do with metal. it was post-punk that came out in the 80s and started in the batcave club in london. if someone listens to post-punk/goth music or perhaps deathrock, the they are goth. it's not necessarily a mentality or a lifestyle. it's basically a fan of goth music. just as metalheads like metal, and emos like screamo and emotive punk.
i can see how it can be mistook for a lifestyle by people because it seems that most goths dress a certain way and act a certain way and do certain things. but you don't realize that there are so many forms of 'goth', but metal is not one of them. that's what mallgoths and babybats think. there are goths that don't dress or act necessarily 'goth', and if i was asked how goths dress or act, i'm sure i couldn't quite explain it perfectly. but i do know and will explain that a goth is a person that is a fan of goth music, and goth music pertains to post-punk/deathrock/cold wave/dark wave and of course the goth/pop bands such as the cure, or siouxsie and the banshees, etc.
i am a deathrocker and i don't appreciate people confusing goth with any sort of metal or just a mentality/lifestyle. people don't research these things well enough anymore.
now of course i know that it can probably be argued that any 'gothic metal' might pertain to metal that has to do with germanic gothic barbarians. as black metal pertains to nordic and/or satanic 'stuff'.

but, you can wear whatever clothes you want, you could look like a total prep, and still have the mentallity of a goth but, i love the looks i get out in public when wearing the full make-up and my trench coat.lol.

Yeah, I agree, being goth means just having the mentality of a goth, and not listening to goth (metal) music or to wear goth clothes.
And yes, the looks of the people are funny, even if I only wear simply black clothes and have long hair, without any make-up. It's even funnier if they don't know what a satanist is, but think that you're one, and get scared of you.
I noticed a few "labels are stupid or unnecessary" posts. And "just be yourself" posts. Well all that is good, the fact is labels ARE necessary in most cases. Religion for example. I consider myself a Satanist and have been blasted verbally by followers of Levay. Simply because I believe Satan exists (Though I don't literally worship him, thus making me NOT a devil worshiper as they claim. Believing in Satan or god does not mean you worship or follow them) Levayans say I am not a Satanist, that Levay invented Satanism blah blah. Satanism has many forms it's just Levay "popularized" it. There are many forms of Satanism. But one can argue that, well since there are so much labels for Satanism why not drop the labels and just have it one, a total Satanism as it were. Sure I'd like that but it aint gonna happen especially with Levays refusing to accept the FACT and yes it is a FACT that other forms of Satanism exist without any thing to do with Levay. Because of that lables are needed to distinguish between Levayans and others. It may not be a good thing but it's necessary, at least it seems so to me.

As for goths, some folks want to make sure folks know that only goths are the ones from history (I think some one even posted about it here). Granted they are goths (the history folks) but even mallgoths and regular goths who have nothing to do with the goths of history are still goths weather the history buffs like it or not (just like there are many Satanists that are not Levayan whether Levayans like it or not). Some of the modern goths of today are a mix of emo and goth. Some are just emos mistaken for goths. Some are just goths. Labels make it easier to tell the difference.

I mean sure it is good folks don't want labels, but really if you are a fan of black metal for example and never heard any COF song ever but heard they were a black metal band (regardless of if they are or not, that is irrelevant in this case), you'd try to find out about the band's music, because of the black metal label. Of course you'd probably not consider them black metal if you are totally into black metal, but you'd probably still like them. But on the other side of the coin labels can be distracting.

Take Slipknot for example. There are a lot of fans of COF who are fans of Slipknot, so for the folks who do not know either band but have a friend into both bands, well they see the friend wear a COF shirt one day and a Slipknot shirt the next. So they will assume they are the same style of band. They will get interested and find out they are NOTHING alike in anyway. Musically they are 100% different. That can turn into a, I don't know how to word it, a uh dislike for the music genre either of these bands may represent if they ended up not liking one of the bands. Other bands in that genre would miss out on potential fans because they are assuming that say Slipknot's genre of music sucks so all bands like Slipknot will suck too, which is far from the truth. Slipknot may kick ass to some and suck to others sure, but other bands like Slipknot may kick ass (or suck) but they won't know, because of the label they are under causing potential fans to not try new bands in that genre, if you get what I am trying to say.

I know this is long and confusing, and most of you probably didn't bother to read this whole damn reply, but to make a short story long. Labels can be needed and necessary but they can also be a hindrance and troublesome, not just in music but in lifestyles and people in general. So being labeled is both good and bad depending on the situation. Usually if I know a chick is a christian I won't bother with her at all, but if I didn't know anything about their religious preferences I would have asked her out if you get what I mean. So the label of christian is a hindrance to me and possibly keeping me from the woman I should have spent the rest of my life with. But than it is good too in that me being a Satanist and her a christian would cause all kinds of problems (though not so for everyone), especially when it comes to future children (even though I can't have children, I have no sperm, that is not relevant to this either). I wouldn't want my kids to love his assholiness god and I'd tell them all the atrocities he has wrought and be praising Satan all the while, while my christian wife would fill their heads full of chrisitan lies like he is a loving god and shit like that. Problems from the get go. But than again it is possible that two totally opposite people can make it work and could have spent the rest of our lives together but oh well, I will shut up now. Sorry for this long winded rant!
