Back when i was dressing what is now labled goth the whole point was to be outside the box. Now thanks to stores such as hot topic and such it is the "cool" thing to be. Do I still wear black, yes. Do I still where black makeup, on occasion but not everyday like i did in high school. Do i still consider myself "goth", if you have to lable it yes, but it is because it is who i am, how i act, my thoughts and ideas ect.... not what i wear.
And what is the deal with all the emo hating? Is this 2006? Although the lines always blur, I think some are confusing emo's with scene kids. I'm not a fan of either, but what's with the negativity? Is because you get called one, and that expressing that you don't like emos, somehow convinces people that you're not emo? People are going to call you whatever stereotype is trendy and very vaguely matches at the moment. So leave them alone like you(presumably) want to be left alone. Also I've never heard a funny emo joke. Because they all consist of some sort of fabricated truth about emo's. e.g. Emos cut, emos will kill them self, etc. It's just over-used, and has no depth, therefor to me is not humorous. But it seems to be trendy to make fun of emos.
It really sounds like I'm defending them, but I'm not, I'm just trying to bring some neutrality and my 2 cents.
Displaying emo hate won't make them go away. It won't make the music go away. And it won't stop people from calling you emo(if you've got enough black on).
