The more recent arguments that I have read on the "Dani Doesn't Put as Much Effort on his Vocals" thread inspired me to create this little discussion. So, I feel this is relevant to not only the band, but to other aspects of the metal genre and onward. Ahem...
Lets start off with a basic question. "What do you think the ideal metal band should look and act like?"
Now, think about this:
"Society uses the media as an influential tool in order to create ideas, norms, and gender roles. Society also uses the media to deem what should be and what should not. The media is used to subordinate some ideas/objects/people socially and politically."
So, my dears, my questions for you are:
1. How has the media influenced your idea of what the "ideal" metal band should look like?
2. Does Cradle fit into the previous question? Explain.
3. Think of the current line-up. What type of message are they trying to convey to society through the recent album, DDVA? Past albums? How does imagery help?
Think about this. Misrepresentation is defined as to represent incorrectly, improperly, or falsely. To represent in an unsatisfactory manner.
How are Cradle and other musicians misrepresented?

It's not like I'm looking at a picture of the band while I listen, and I rarely go to concerts and see them.
2. If you're talking about the band's actual image, i.e. the clothes, makeup, stage persona, etc, it's pretty bland these days. Nothing stands out other than Dani's flair. As far as their lyrics and message, though, they're pretty unique, but I don't think the ideal metal band needs to write concept albums or use keyboards like CoF.
3. I really don't think Cradle has ever tried to convey a message to society in any album. The albums and songs are narratives, not critical of any aspect of society, and they really don't send any messages. I don't see how a story of a demon and her narrator/lover has any meaning to society, Imagery doesn't really help send any message in CoF's case (some bands' images do help, just not CoF's).
In metal, really the most misrepresentation is the constant accusation of satanism and the idea that metal has to be brootal, trve, long hair, shit lyrics and makeup. Other than that, it's becoming more acceptable every day.

1. They should look gothic and wear chains on there pants and wear eye-liner.
2. Cradle fit's somewhat, but are more upper class/upscale gothic with real bondage leather outfits/capes/spikes/axes, etc.
3. They are conveying "Supreme vampyric horror metal" with a percentage of glam on DDVA. Other albums are just about "Supreme angel-rape vampyric anti-christian gothic sadomaschist feminist black death symphonic metal".
Those questions are asking alot and it's hard to take it seriously, as I am joking.

She clearly needs some help on getting some ideas for her project, and you joking is not helping her out one bit, which is why she started this thread in the first place, to get some help.

1. I am taking a course based for my major (journalism) called Media Criticism. Hence where all the media and misrepresentation come from.
2. The arguments on the aforementioned thread inspired me to come up with this discussion.
3. I do not need help with a project of any sort. I was studying for a quiz, but I got it down :]
I just came up with this for sheer enjoyment and to see some opinions.
4. Spirit Crusher, jokes are welcome and I hope you feel better.

Permalink Reply by Jacob on November 15, 2011 at 4:34 1. the media, the society, every aspect of the environment that has raised me has made me think of a long hair stoner looking dude in a pair of ripped up jeans and a black t shirt-check out either Global Metal or Metal: a Headbanger's Journey, i can't remember which, but Rob Zombie talks about the sterotipical metalhead and he says it became like an army of kids who fit the typical description i just gave, and so i believe that this is the most basically accepted form of a metalhead, but the media, the society today, which includes each of us, i believe is so confused with the definition of "metal," or "metalhead" that today results of a metalhead may vary more than ever and you can't tell by the outter shell as anyone will claim to be a metalhead in some form or another
2. there are many forms of metal, as a generalized whole, the mighty band, Cradle of Filth does fit the image of a metalhead-there aren't many other people who would portray such an image as each of these fellows do, yet they're not fitting to the traditional metalhead that i imagine
3. i don't know what message they're conveying, it is impossible to know such a thing unless you yourself are the creator of said distriputed art, but i interpret as does everybody else my own idea of what they portray to me, or what i think they may be attempting to portray, and now, as i see Cradle with Darkly, Darkly, i think they're trying too hard to be extreme and scary in their image and not trying hard enough in their image. as it's been stated previously, Cradle, with these last few albums has focussed on the story behind their albums rather than the music of them (to my belief anyway) but maybe that was intentional. i myself can appreciate the stories they tell, as they are interesting, but i find myself highly disappointed with the musical value, i feel that these stories here, with the way that the band, or Dani, or whoever's running the madhouse now has approached these stories, it may have been a better idea to make a book, a film, or add them to that poetry book Dani's always talking about publishing-the last two albums, compared to previous albums before that have brought me to these thoughts, and the images have really changed too, and that's been a strenght and a weakness to me. as previously stated, chewed up, and spit out, my opinion on Dani's haircut isn't of highest regards, and it has effected the image of the band a bit for me. i do enjoy some of the things they've held, like the circus freaks in the music video for Honey and Sulphur, and portraying Gilles De Rais as the Big Bad Wolf before Little Red Riding Hood in Godspeed, and as a whole, Cradle's album art has never been disappointing, but again, the image they've portrayed themselves with costumes (hair) and make-up have been a distraction and a let down for me, but nothing that affects my opinion on the music, the music itself isn't the best either.
everyone, Cradle of Filth, Dani Filth, musicians, you, i-we're all misrepresented every day of our lives in too many ways to count, it's a part of life, but at the same time, it's human nature to judge, so it can only be accepted for such things as critisism, compliments, or quesions-the best to do i believe, is to portray the image you wish, voice it and why you've done so if you feel it's necessary, and move on.
and i don't know if i'm making sense anymore, so i'll stop typing now
Permalink Reply by Kevin Hall on November 15, 2011 at 5:57 1 - No, the media hasn't influenced me at all regarding what they should look or sound like, if by media you mean the Press in magazine articles or video blogs.
2. In general any reference to Cradle in the media is usually a good thing (any publicity is at least publicity) but I do know the guys in the band are in general not influenced by media criticism. I guess to try to keep the music interesting for fans they obviously listen to opinions. But Cradle being media influenced, no.
3. No message. Now what people conceive is another story and try and the media stupidly try and read all sorts of "messages" and meanings into what they do, misrepresentation.
They are simply putting on a show they hope people will like inside the metal genre I would imagine. If they wanted to be perceived as "really famous" they would possibly change their show completely. The "imagery" helps to portray the feel of the songs, atmosphere, so I would say imagery was very important.
So the ideal band? Odd question, there isn't just one luckily or you'd get bored very quickly lol. I prefer individuality, groups that create their own unique style not jump on some genre band-wagon.
