First, I want to say that Cradle of Filth is one of my favorite metal bands ever, for many years.

A little bit about me:

I'm a guitarist, keyboardist, and musician, this is most of what I do in my life, and I have the ambition for a musical Careers. I'm also sharing with you, Paul Alender, the hobby of martial arts.

I'm sure you aware to the dangers of hands injuries due to martial art practice, and the implications of hands injuries on playing a musical instrument. So my question for you is: what can i do to extra protecting my hands during martial arts practice, so I'll fill safer about my guitar\keyboard playing abilities?

A little bit details about my martial arts practice: I practice mixed martial arts, and most of my training is on Boxing, muay thai, wretling, and brazilian jiu jitsu. I Practice martial only as a hobby, nothing more than twice a week, and that's it...very amateurish...

ok that's all, I'll be very happy if you'll answer me, thanks if you reading.

He won't be reading this...

So, unless someone on this forum does martial arts, you won't be getting any help.

I used to do Jiu Jitsu quite a few years ago. The only thing I can recommend is those padded gloves, they might help when doing throws, hand/arm/wrist locks etc.. And obviously warming up properly will help a lot too.

P.S: If you look up Paul on Facebook, you could get an answer from him here.

You will break a finger somewhere down the line so my recommendation is make sure you get a specialist and not some random hospital doctor to set it. I made that mistake and can't bend my ring finger fully to play chords (I now use my pinky for "power" chords etc). This all occurred as I went to a medical center and "assumed" the doctor knew what he was talking about (Yep, an Indian  money-grabbing arsewipe, I should've guessed).

Same with insurance, they will get out as cheap as possible so be aware and don't accept anything and get second opinions.

Paul is mainly doing Wing Chun as far as learning goes, the rest he does himself (Karate) but no Jui Jutsu from what he has mentioned to me in chats.

Maybe it would be better to email him in person...

what is his email address?

Paul will tell you -

a) - he doesn't spar or do full contact anymore for just that reason

b) - he was just lucky

Message or post on his Facebook Page if you want similar answers as he has mentioned this in many interviews and in chats before. It's Martial Arts and injuries happen ... I've only been doing MA for 45 years ... what would I know?

Ok Kevin, so what do you think i should do, stop playing music, or stop practice martial arts?

Thank you for your help...

Neither - just be as careful as possible and use as much protective gear as possible. If the club is too "hard" (as in making your fists into calloused lumps) find a club that uses a more "softer" (defensive) form of training. :)

The problem is with grappling, not with striking.

In my club, when we practice striking, and spare striking, we use gloves and Full protection gear(teeth, balls, legs), and the coach tell us to strike carefully and not too hard.

I really feel safe in striking lessons.

But in jiu jitsu lessons, when we spare grappling, I don't feel so safe.

The thing is:

Most of the time I don't have to afraid when someone submit me with an armbar, because the people in my club aren't crazy, and they won't brake my hand. I just have to tap and they live me, and even if I don't tap, people in my club don't break bones.

But there is no defensive equipment that can help you when someone submit you with an armbar and decides to break your hand/shoulder/palm/wrist(in any case).

But the real problem is - when you spare grappling, and you and your partner start raving, there is always the possibilty that someone heavy will land strongly on your hand(and on your leg too), and break it. There are some more similiar situations in grappling sparing, that can end with serious, injuries, and I don't think gloves or any other defensive equipment can help you in those situations either.

this is the main danger in my club, but I don't think there is a jiu jitsu club out there, that doesn't includes sparing in the training.

Besides, all the fun in grappling is to rave a little bit.

Yes, Jiu Jitsu is a different matter. I broke my "Ring" finger on my left hand (yes THAT one which causes problems playing guitar now!) when simply throwing someone. My hand got caught in the clothing as I turned in and twisted, not even completing the throw.

You are right, I know arm bars,  chokes, wrist locks, most people do not go too hard and allow tap out but it's the rare times when simply rolling around or attempting throws that injuries are unavoidable I'm afraid.
We were very lightly practicing escapes from "bear hugs" and my "attacker" dislocated two of my ribs! He barely held me but just the angle or the way he lifted me off the ground, they just popped? No malice or rough attacking at all, just strange as he is very good and in no way too rough, ever!?

We'd practiced this 1000's of times before and nothing, so unfortunately these things happen and like you say, it wouldn't matter what I had on.

I thought you meant more Karate but you're right, there isn't any clubs that don't "spar" or have "practice" fighting, throws and groundwork (locks and chokes etc) and counter techniques in Jui Jitsu! LOL

Someone heavy, especially beginners can, and do land badly on you as they lose balance and can fall like anyone learning, just try as best you can to keep focused on them, but not always possible obviously.. Agree, you club sounds quite good and certainly NOT crazy :)

HINT - In Judo or Jiu Jitsu the rule is you can turn and drop onto one knee (left one) and adjust your Belt and Gi ... whether you need to is irrelevant but it gives you a chance to catch your breath and focus! Undo and re-tie your belt. In competition this is a law and you cannot be disqualified or failed!
